Biography

Chien-Min Kao is a Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Chicago. His research primarily focuses on positron emission tomography (PET), molecular imaging, and tomographic image reconstruction. Dr. Kao's lab has pioneered the use of waveform sampling PET detectors and has developed a voltage-based sampling method for PET data acquisition known as MVT (multi-voltage threshold). This technique allows for the digitization of rapidly generated signals by modern time-of-flight (TOF) PET detectors. His work includes developing organ-specific PET imagers for humans and integrating simultaneous PET/MRI systems. Additionally, he is involved in the design of flat-panel TOF PET detectors that support rapid configuration and development of human PET systems. Dr. Kao is co-directing the PET/CT/SPECT facility at BSD Integrated Small Animal Imaging Research Resource, collaborating with Dr. Chin-Tu Chen and other investigators on basic translational biomedical research related to cancer and neurological diseases. He aims to develop artificial intelligence methods for analyzing multi-modality longitudinal studies and data compartmental modeling, facilitating discoveries in population studies.
