Chika Tonooka is a scholar in the field of history with a focus on world order from a historical perspective, particularly on modern Britain and modern Japan. She completed her undergraduate studies (BA) at the University of Cambridge, followed by a Master’s degree (MA) at the University of Tokyo. She returned to Cambridge where she earned her doctoral degree (PhD) with a dissertation entitled ‘Japanese “civilisation” ideas progress Britain, c.1880-1945’, which was awarded the joint winner of the 2020 Prince Consort & Thirwall Prize and the Seeley Medal for the best doctoral dissertation in History. Currently, she has a forthcoming book published by Princeton University Press that builds upon her academic work. Chika immigrated to the UK from Japan as a child. Her previous experience includes her role as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Associate Research Scholar & Lecturer at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS) from 2020 to 2022, as well as serving as the Course Director for the Global History Pathway Module in the MSt in History at the University of Cambridge in 2019. Additionally, she co-founded a virtual Modern British History Workshop in 2020 and was a member of the New York-Cambridge Training Collaboration for Twentieth-Century British History from 2015 to 2018.
