Biography

Chinnaiah Jangam is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Carleton University. He holds a Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and has previously been awarded the Felix Fellowship and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Dissertation Fellowship. With an academic focus on social intellectual history, particularly concerning Dalits in modern South Asia, Jangam has authored the book 'Dalits Making Modern India,' published by Oxford University Press in 2017. His research explores the Dalit perspectives on nationalism and their significance in the formation of an independent India, emphasizing their contributions towards the abolition of untouchability and caste inequality. Jangam is currently engaged in multiple research projects that aim to illuminate the histories of marginalization and resistance from the lens of Dalit experiences. His teaching encompasses South Asian intellectual, social, and cultural histories with a focus on decolonization, and he has held editorial responsibilities in peer-reviewed journals. Jangam has actively participated in service roles within the university, including chairing the Grievance Policy Administration Committee.
