Biography

Chloe Ireton is an Associate Professor of History specializing in the Iberian World from 1500 to 1800. She is a British Academy Wolfson Fellow (2023-2026) with research interests encompassing the histories of slavery, freedom, empire, and the early southern Atlantic world. Her teaching and research focus on social, cultural, and intellectual history, and she applies methods from microhistory and historical geography. Ireton's book, "Slavery & Freedom: Black Thought in the Early Spanish Atlantic" (Cambridge University Press, 2025), explores contested meanings of slavery and freedom among free and enslaved Black individuals. She is actively researching a monograph on Black and Indigenous political knowledge in the early modern Atlantic and continues to contribute to the field through significant publications and teaching at UCL, where she prioritizes inclusive and inquiry-based education. Ireton collaborates on public lectures and community engagement projects, highlighting her commitment to broadening participation in historical discourse and education. Her scholarly work has appeared in numerous prestigious journals, further solidifying her role as a leading researcher in her field.
