Biography

Chris Cottrell’s creative practice explores the relationship between the built environment and the subtlest invisible forces that influence our world. His focus is on the interplay of air, pressure, movement, textiles, and sound, addressing how to create meaningful relationships within surrounding environments. He is currently working on designing new living environments and collaborating with individuals on the autism spectrum. His work is characterized by a transdisciplinary approach that prioritizes collaboration with participants, drawing opportunities from material and contextual cues. Cottrell describes his practice as 'architectural judo', a transversal methodology operating at the intersections of installation, performative art, architecture, and writing. His academic background encompasses a PhD from RMIT University and professional training in architecture from the University of Auckland, along with a Master’s degree from the Edinburgh College of Art. He has exhibited extensively across New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom and has held international artist residencies in Slovenia, Scotland, and New Zealand. His writing has appeared in several prestigious journals including Leonardo and the International Journal of Interior Architecture + Spatial Design.
