Dr. Chris Darimont

Biography

Chris Darimont is an interdisciplinary conservation scientist at the University of Victoria, where he holds the position of Raincoast Research Chair in Applied Conservation Science in the Department of Geography. His research addresses critical conservation issues through the integration of natural and social science methodologies. Darimont's work primarily focuses on conservation science, resource management, wildlife, and marine-terrestrial interactions, particularly within the context of the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia. He earned his PhD in evolution ecology from the University of Victoria, and his postdoctoral research was conducted at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Throughout his career, he has collaborated extensively with conservation leaders and Indigenous communities along the coastal areas of British Columbia, fostering opportunities for capacity development in these communities. He has a long-standing affiliation with the Raincoast Conservation Foundation, where he has served as the director of science. Darimont is also committed to science communication and often engages with high-profile media outlets. He teaches courses such as GEOG 391 (Contemporary Topics in Coastal Conservation) and GEOG 353 (Coastal Marine Resources).
