Biography

Chris Dent is a Professor of Industrial Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh's School of Mathematics. He joined the School as a Chancellor's Fellow Reader in September 2016 and was promoted in the summer of 2020. Before this, he was a Research Associate at the Institute for Energy Systems in Edinburgh from 2007 to 2009, and from 2009 to 2016, he worked at Durham University in various positions including Research Fellow, Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. His primary research interests focus on decision support analysis in energy, infrastructure, and government sectors. Notable projects include leading the Managing Uncertainty in Government Modelling project at the Alan Turing Institute and serving as Co-Director of the Centre for Energy Systems Integration, where he coordinates interdisciplinary modelling efforts. He is also Technical Lead on the National Digital Twin Programme's Climate Resilience Demonstrator, working on electricity security and supply risk analysis. In 2023-24, he holds a knowledge exchange fellowship at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences while collaborating with the Global Power System Transformation consortium on innovative strategies in energy. He is also a Turing Fellow at the UK's National Institute for Data Science and AI. Chris has received several awards for his contributions, including the IET Mike Sargeant Young Engineer Career Achievement Award in 2012 and the Edinburgh Mathematical Society Impact Award in 2022. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a Senior Member of IEEE. In addition to his academic pursuits, Chris enjoys playing the cello and hillwalking, having become a Munroist in 2009.
