Biography

Chris's research focuses on American history, African American history, military history, and American cultural history. His recent book, 'African Americans in the Pacific War: Race, Nationality, Fight for Freedom,' was published by Cambridge University Press in late 2018. Chris completed his BA (Hons) and MA at the University of Western Australia, and his PhD at the University of New South Wales. A revised version of his PhD thesis, 'Perfecting Family: Antislavery Marriages in Nineteenth-Century America,' was published by the University of Massachusetts Press. His earlier work includes the book 'African America Haiti: Emigration & Black Nationalism in the Nineteenth Century,' published in 2000 by Greenwood Press. His research also examines the social and cultural dimensions of war, with publications that include co-authored textbooks exploring Vietnam and the Pacific wars, as well as Hollywood's portrayal of the South Seas during the Pacific War. Additionally, Chris's current research investigates the role of African Americans during the Korean War and explores the experiences of American servicemen on R&R in Australia during the Vietnam War.
