Professor Chris Greening leads the One Health Microbiology group at Monash University’s Biomedicine Discovery Institute. He obtained a first-class degree in Molecular Cellular Biochemistry from the University of Oxford in 2010, followed by a doctorate at the University of Otago in 2013, focusing on the physiological roles of hydrogenases in mycobacteria. After gaining postdoctoral experience at the University of Otago, CSIRO, and the Australian National University, he was appointed group leader at Monash University’s School of Biological Sciences in 2016, where he completed an environmentally-focused ARC DECRA Fellowship. In 2020, he transitioned to the Department of Microbiology at Monash, carrying out research funded by an NHMRC EL2 Fellowship. His research group, the Health Microbiology laboratory, investigates the causes and consequences of bacterial persistence, including understanding how bacteria survive in nutrient-deprived environments and resist antimicrobial treatments. He has led several major projects focused on environmental sustainability and public health. His interdisciplinary approach brings together diverse expertise to tackle key health challenges, aligning with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals. Professor Greening was awarded the Fenner Medal by the Australian Academy of Science in 2022.
