Biography

Chris Herd is a Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta specializing in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. With an extensive background in geology, Herd is recognized internationally for his expertise in Martian meteorites and leads the University’s Meteorite Curation Lab, which is home to Canada's largest collection of meteorites. His research, funded by both NSERC and the Canadian Space Agency, focuses on meteorite types and their implications for understanding planetary formation and differentiation. Herd has led significant studies on the Tagish Lake meteorite and has contributed to the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover mission as a participating scientist. His work has enhanced the understanding of organic molecules and the conditions of solar system bodies. He has published numerous influential papers on Martian meteorites and has been involved in multidisciplinary research initiatives. In addition to his research, he teaches several courses related to planetary geology, offering insights into the evolution of Earth and solar system processes. He received the Faculty of Science Research Award in 2013 and was elected a fellow of the Meteoritical Society in 2016.
