Biography

Chris Jeppesen is a social cultural historian specializing in Modern Britain and the British Empire, particularly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He has a keen interest in the relationship between British institutions and the empire. His current research examines the historic connections between Trinity College and the economies of enslavement within the British Empire. Jeppesen's work explores a range of themes related to pre-Victorian empire, including the connections between the East India Company and the Caribbean sugar economy, as well as the motivations of colonial officials and the material legacies of the empire in post-decolonization Britain. He is also part of a research team investigating the social and cultural experiences of secondary education in Britain post-1945, with a particular focus on the impacts of decolonization on the welfare state. Jeppesen studied at the universities of St Andrews and Cambridge and has taught at University College London, King’s College London, and the University of Cambridge before joining Trinity College.
