Biography

Prof. Kyriakakis received his BS degree from the California Institute of Technology and his MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California. His research interests lie at the intersection of acoustics, psychoacoustics, and audio signal processing. His work focuses on acoustical measurement methods for loudspeakers, rooms, and device enclosures, and he, along with his students, has developed novel signal processing algorithms to optimize performance. His research topics include multichannel audio acquisition and rendering, the use of virtual microphones and speakers, and advanced signal processing techniques aimed at enhancing sound quality in small portable devices. A recent focus of his research is on Archaeoacoustics, particularly characterizing and simulating the acoustics of medieval Byzantine churches. This unique interdisciplinary project bridges engineering and art history through the theme of Hearing Lost Sounds of Antiquity. Prof. Kyriakakis has published nearly 100 technical papers and authored a book titled Immersive Audio Signal Processing. He holds patents related to acoustic measurements and loudspeaker technologies. In 2006, he received the World Technology Network Award, which recognizes innovators in technology that foster paradigm shifts.
