Biography

Chris Letheby is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Western Australia (UWA). His areas of specialization include the philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and neuroscience. Letheby's research interests delve into the causal mechanisms and epistemic status of transformative spiritual practices, exploring the possibility of 'naturalistic spirituality' and the nature of self-awareness. Letheby’s research focuses primarily on the use of classic psychedelic drugs within neuroscience and psychiatry. He authored the monograph 'Philosophy Psychedelics', published by Oxford University Press in 2021. Letheby has also gained recognition for his interdisciplinary collaborations with neuroscientists and psychologists. He is currently developing a new undergraduate unit, 'Philosophy Psychedelics', which is the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. His previous positions include a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Adelaide, where he was awarded the Faculty of Arts Prize for Outstanding Research by an Early Career Researcher in 2022.
