Chris Lidman completed his PhD in astronomy at the Australian National University in 1994. He began his career as an ESO Fellow at the European Southern Observatory, joining the Supernova Cosmology Project, which was pivotal in the discovery of the accelerating universe, recognized by the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. His responsibilities included managing near-infrared instruments at the La Silla Observatory and contributing to the commissioning of new instruments, including a near-infrared imager and spectrograph for the New Technology Telescope. Lidman worked intensively on the properties of Dark Energy during his tenure at ESO and was promoted to Full Astronomer by 2004. In 2010, he returned to Australia as an ARC Future Fellow and founded the OzDES project. Since joining ANU in 2018, he has served as Director of the SSO, focusing on research, teaching, and student supervision. He has been involved in significant cosmological studies using gravitational wave sirens to explore dark energy and is part of the LSST 4MOST observational program.
