Chris MacMinn's background is in mechanical engineering with a specialization in fluid mechanics. He incorporates interdisciplinary perspectives from engineering, hydrology, and applied mathematics into his work. He earned his SB in 2005 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and subsequently spent a year in engineering consulting, working with companies such as Creare LLC and Navigant Consulting, Inc. Chris returned to MIT to earn his SM in 2008 and PhD in 2012 in mechanical engineering, during which he worked under Professor Ruben Juanes on fluid mechanics related to geological carbon dioxide storage. After completing his PhD, he became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Yale Climate and Energy Institute at Yale University, collaborating with Professors John Wettlaufer and Eric Dufresne on poromechanics and soft granular materials. Chris joined the University of Oxford in October 2013 as a University Lecturer, receiving the title of Associate Professor in early 2014. He leads the Poromechanics Laboratory at Oxford, working with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and earth scientists, utilizing mathematical modeling and numerical simulations to study flow, transport, and deformation in porous media with applications in subsurface science, engineering, soft materials, biology, and medicine.
