Chris Rylander is an Associate Professor in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, as well as M.S. and B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the same institution. His research focuses on solving healthcare-related problems through mechanical engineering design and manufacturing techniques, particularly in the areas of biomechanical engineering and thermal/fluid systems. He serves as the Principal Investigator for the Medical Device Laboratory. Rylander aims to improve the quality of life for patients, advance scientific knowledge, and educate the next generation of mechanical and biomedical engineers. He began his academic career at Virginia Tech in 2007 and has received numerous grants from sponsors such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, totaling $4.23 million in funding. He has published 30 peer-reviewed articles in high-ranking journals, including Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, and PLoS Cancer Research. Rylander has graduated four Ph.D. and nine M.S. students and is currently advising several Ph.D. candidates. He also chairs the Research Development Committee of the American Society for Lasers in Medicine and Surgery.
