Dr. Chris Slootweg

Biography

Chris Slootweg is a full professor at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in circular chemistry. After completing his undergraduate education at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2001, he progressed to earn his PhD in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. Koop Lammertsma. He then pursued postdoctoral studies at ETH Zürich before starting an independent scientific career in 2006 at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Slootweg became an associate professor in 2014 and moved to the University of Amsterdam in 2016. His research focuses on sustainable chemistry, particularly the design and synthesis of functional molecules from renewable resources. He emphasizes the development of novel circular technologies that utilize chemistry to tackle pressing issues related to resource consumption and waste management. As a co-founder and scientific advisor of SusPhos BV, he aims to transform phosphate-rich waste streams into valuable products. Slootweg’s work contributes significantly to societal and environmental challenges, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He has received numerous awards, including the NWO VICI grant and the Thieme Chemistry Journals Award, and has held prominent roles in academic publishing and education within the field.
