Biography

A clinician scientist specializing in pediatric infectious disease, I deliver inpatient and outpatient care to children with complex infections in the Wessex region. I lead the congenital infection service, implementing new pathways for diagnostic testing in newborns for cytomegalovirus (CMV), thus reducing the time to diagnosis and commencement of treatment for affected infants. My research focuses on interventions during pregnancy to prevent infections in early life, leading studies aimed at reducing the risk of CMV acquisition through simple behavioral modifications. I have been leading studies in the UK on CMV vaccines for women of childbearing age and adolescents. As a medical advisor to the charity CMV Action and co-director of the European Congenital CMV Initiative, I have become an expert in the field of maternal vaccination. My work has included leadership roles in clinical trials for pertussis, RSV, GBS, and COVID-19 vaccines during pregnancy. I am also the co-director of IMPRINT, a global network of experts on vaccination during pregnancy and early life. My contributions to the national COVID-19 response encompass leadership in clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines and collaboration with national groups to identify new conditions related to COVID-19.
