Christelle Alvarez's research focuses primarily on ancient Egyptian philology, epigraphy, beliefs, practices, and the socio-historical context of the 3rd millennium BCE. She is a member of the Mission archéologique franco-suisse de Saqqâra (MafS) and has directed fieldwork at the pyramid of king Qakare Ibi during the 8th Dynasty, around 2150–2134 BCE, in South Saqqara. Her work is interdisciplinary, combining archaeological data and philological analysis supported by literary theories and epigraphy to better comprehend the world's oldest surviving corpus of religious texts, known as the Pyramid Texts. Currently, she is focused on publishing hieroglyphic ritual texts inscribed on the walls of the burial chamber of king Ibi. This is based on findings of hundreds of new fragments and a reassessment of the architectural structures of the pyramid. She is also working on a monograph concerning the Memphite tradition in inscribing pyramids and its development in mortuary literature at the end of the Late Old Kingdom. She studied Egyptology at the Coptic University of Geneva and holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford.
