Biography

Christelle Fischer-Bovet specializes in the social and cultural history of the Eastern Mediterranean from the time of Alexander the Great through to the Romans (4th century BC to 1st century AD), with a special focus on Greco-Roman Egypt. Her notable publication, 'Army and Society in Ptolemaic Egypt' (Cambridge University Press, 2014; paperback 2019), utilizes documentary evidence such as papyri and inscriptions, along with social theory, to explore how the army in Hellenistic Egypt functioned as a vehicle for land distribution, solidifying group identity, and facilitating interactions between Greek and Egyptian cultures. She has authored numerous articles and book chapters that delve into topics including Hellenistic warfare, the dynamics of the Ptolemaic Empire, and the complex identities within ancient Egypt. She earned her Ph.D. in Classics from Stanford University in 2008 and has held positions at prestigious institutions including UC Berkeley and USC.
