Christer Bruun teaches Roman history and Latin language literature at the Department of Classics at the University of Toronto, having begun his North American academic career in 1994. He served as Chair of the department from 2013 to 2019 and as Associate Chair and Graduate Coordinator during 2005-2009 and 2020-2021. His research interests encompass Roman history including political, social, and cultural aspects; Roman epigraphy; and the historical significance of water supply in ancient Rome, particularly as discussed by Frontinus. He has authored or edited six books and published around 130 articles in international scholarly languages, with contributions in Finnish and Swedish. His notable work includes the 2015 Oxford Handbook of Roman Epigraphy, edited with Jonathan Edmondson. Currently, he is completing a historical monograph on Roman Ostia. Bruun has received the Standard Research Grant twice and the Insight Grant once from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. In 2010, he was elected an external Fellow of the Societas Scientiarum Fennica, and has been involved with the Committee AIEGL from 2017 to 2022 and the Council of Classical Association Canada from 2012 to 2015. He is a member of the Academic Board for the international network Impact Empire and sits on the Advisory Board for the CARMEN project, funded by the European Union.
