Biography

Christian Calliess teaches Public Law, Environmental Law, and European Law at the Free University of Berlin since 2008. His research focuses on European, Constitutional, and Environmental Law. He is co-editor of a commentary on EU primary law published by Beck Verlag and the author of a textbook on constitutional law with references to international and European law. He studied law at Saarland University and the University of Göttingen, where he passed his first state examination in 1990. Following a scholarship at the College of Europe in Bruges, he passed his second state examination and completed his doctoral dissertation in 1995. Calliess served as a research assistant at the Europa-Institut of Saarland University and attained his habilitation in 2000. He has held professorships at the universities of Göttingen and Graz before moving to Berlin. Calliess has been an expert for environmental issues for the federal government and participated in several expert groups, including one for sustainable economy. Additionally, he served as a legal advisor to the President of the European Commission. His guest professorships include institutions in Hungary, France, the USA, and the UK.
