Christian Doerig obtained his PhD in molecular virology from the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He completed post-doctoral training focused on the herpes simplex virus in the USA before shifting his research focus to malaria. He pioneered studies on protein phosphorylation in Plasmodium falciparum, which are the virulent parasites responsible for human malaria. He holds the position of Directeur de Recherches with the French biomedical research agency Inserm and is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, UK, where he established Inserm units and the Wellcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology. In 2011, he joined Monash University as the Head of the Department of Microbiology. His research aims to define the role of protein phosphorylation in the life cycle of the Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite, targeting molecular pathways that might reveal new antimalarial drug leads. He has made significant contributions in areas of signal transduction, cell cycle control, and kinase interactions in malaria parasites, and he actively collaborates with structural biology labs to enhance drug discovery efforts.
