Biography

Christian Ernsten is an Assistant Professor of Heritage Studies in the Department of History at Maastricht University. He serves as the program director for the Research Master in Cultures, Arts, Science, and Technology (CAST) and is affiliated with the Maastricht Experimental Research Arts Network (MERIAN). His expertise includes Colonial Heritage, Circularity, Urban Heritage, and Landscape Heritage. Prior to his current role, he worked as a lecturer in Cultural Heritage at the Reinwardt Academy, part of the Amsterdam University of Arts. Ernsten holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town, as well as an MA with distinction from the University of Groningen and an MPhil with distinction from the University of Cape Town. His research has been published in several journals, including 'Archaeologies', 'International Journal of Heritage Studies', and 'Urban Forum'. He has held visiting research fellowships at various institutions, including the University of Gothenburg and the University of Amsterdam. Additionally, Ernsten directed an Amsterdam-based design action collective and was involved in coordinating WWII commemorative events in Amsterdam. He has experience as an editor for 'Volume', a magazine focused on architecture and visual culture, which was founded by Rem Koolhaas.
