Dr. Christian Freigang

Biography

Christian Freigang is a German art historian specializing in the history and theory of architecture from the Middle Ages to the modern period. He completed his studies in art history, classical archaeology, historical auxiliary sciences, and library science across various universities, including Munich, Bonn, and Berlin. Freigang earned his doctorate in 1990 with his dissertation on the cathedrals of Narbonne, Toulouse, and Rodez. He has held significant academic positions, such as Assistant at the École d'Architecture in Geneva and various roles at the University of Göttingen, where he worked on architecture history. He became a full professor at the Free University of Berlin in 2012. His research interests include medieval and 19th-20th-century architecture, primarily in Germany and France, architectural theory and perception, and the study of late medieval art and court culture. Freigang has organized numerous international conferences and exhibitions, contributing substantially to the field of art history. He has also been involved in various academic institutions and has served on several editorial boards.
