Biography

Christian Gates ST-PIERRE is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the Université de Montréal. His research specializes in the archaeology of Indigenous populations in Quebec and the Northeastern United States. Gates ST-PIERRE focuses on material culture, particularly ceramics and bone artifacts, subsistence economies, cultural identity, and social interactions. He employs integrative and interdisciplinary approaches, including social archaeology, experimental archaeology, and archaeometry, which encompasses zooarchaeology and traceology. His work also involves contemporary historical studies, archaeological heritage protection, knowledge dissemination, museology, and ethical and theoretical questions in archaeology. He has led numerous archaeological research projects both in private firms and academia, notably the Projet Tiohtià:ke, which aims to reconstruct Montréal's Indigenous history through archaeology and oral tradition in partnership with the Kahnawake Mohawk Council and Pointe-à-Callière Museum. Additionally, he directs the ArchéoScience/ArchéoSociale research team and is actively involved in various collaborations with multiple institutions and agencies.
