Biography

Christian Lange is a Professor of Arabic Islamic Studies at Utrecht University, with a doctorate from Harvard University obtained in 2006. His research primarily concentrates on the premodern intellectual cultural history of the Islamic world, specifically in fields such as Islamic eschatology, Islamic law and legal theory, and Islamic mysticism. Lange has been a Principal Investigator for various significant research grants, including the ERC Starting Grant project "The Hereafter in Islamic Traditions" and the ERC Consolidator Grant project "The Senses of Islam." He also leads a current NWO Vici Grant project focusing on sensory history in the Islamic world from 1500 to 1900. Lange has published extensively, including works on concepts of justice and punishment during the Seljuq dynasty, the Islamic understanding of paradise and hell, and the first comprehensive monograph on Muhammad titled 'Mohammed: Perspectives on the Prophet.' He actively welcomes inquiries regarding research supervision at the Master’s and PhD levels, particularly for projects that bridge Islamic Studies and the Study of Religion.
