Christian Thomas Leitmeir grew up in Donauwörth, Southern Germany. He studied Musicology, Comparative Literature, and Philosophy at the University of Munich from 1995, later completing an MMus degree in Musicology at King’s College London in 1999. In 2003, he was awarded a DPhil from Karl-Eberhards-Universität Tübingen. His academic career includes a Frances Yates Research Fellowship at the Warburg Institute in London from 2003 to 2006, followed by a position at Bangor University from 2007 to 2015, before joining the University of Oxford in 2015. Christian primarily teaches the history of music from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, palaeography, and music philology. He is engaged in research on German Romantic opera and music around 1900, with particular focus on Richard Strauss, alongside interdisciplinary research that bridges theology and art history. He has served as co-editor of the journal Plainsong & Medieval Music and is a member of the editorial board for the Journal Alamire Foundation Music Theory & Analysis. In 2013, he was elected a member of the Academy of Europe (Academia Europaea).
