Biography

Christian Schoof is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia. His research primarily focuses on fluid dynamics with an emphasis on the physical processes occurring in glaciers and ice sheets. His long-term goal is to understand how the shape and volume of ice masses change over time and interact with the wider environment. In pursuit of this goal, he has engaged in a wide array of topics, such as large-scale dynamics of ocean-terminating ice sheets, physics of glacier sliding, and subglacial hydraulics. His approach combines applied mathematics and physics with direct, in-situ observations. Theoretical work includes the study of differential equations and the use of mixture methods, applied analysis, scientific computing, and perturbation methods within dynamical systems theory. His current research includes investigating crevasse evolution on buckling ice sheets and ice shelves, the evolving thermal state of ice sheets, and aspects of subglacial hydraulics and ice flow interactions.
