Biography

Christian Sorace is an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College. His research explores political concepts and practices in China and Mongolia, with a particular focus on the study of ideology, discourse, urban planning, air pollution, and aesthetics. Sorace's notable work includes the book 'Shaken Authority: China’s Communist Party and the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake' published by Cornell University Press in 2017, which examines the Chinese Communist Party’s legitimation strategies and the conceptual frameworks of ideology, language, and aesthetics. This work reveals how the Party’s visions for the future and models for political and economic development have influenced post-earthquake reconstruction and the reallocation of resources. In 2022, he served as a Fulbright Fellow and Visiting Scholar at the National University of Mongolia, where he focused on urban crises and the redevelopment of the ger district, addressing the chronic air pollution in Ulaanbaatar and its connection to broader democratic deficits.
