Biography

Christian Viau is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University. He holds a B.A.Sc., M.A.Sc., and Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa and is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). His research interests focus on the development of wood-based composite structural elements, particularly in the areas of mechanically-laminated timber, cross-laminated timber, and glued-laminated timber. He employs finite-element modeling techniques to analyze wood structural members, utilizing software such as ABAQUS and LS-DYNA. Additionally, he investigates the behavior of mass-timber structures under blast loads and during earthquake events, contributing to multi-hazard design frameworks in the built infrastructure. With a commitment to advancing sustainable engineering practices, Professor Viau also engages in mentoring graduate research students and offers various courses on structural analysis and design.
