Biography

Christiana Ruhrberg conducted PhD research at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF; Cancer Research UK London Research Institute), focusing on proteins that promote epidermal barrier function. She was named Young Cell Biologist of the Year by the British Society for Cell Biology. Following her doctoral studies, she completed postdoctoral training in Robb Krumlauf's lab at the National Institute of Medical Research, studying cranial motor neuron development. She then worked with David Shima at the ICRF to elucidate molecular mechanisms of blood vessel growth, receiving the Werner-Risau Prize for outstanding contributions to endothelial cell biology by the German Society for Cell Biology. Currently, as a Professor of Neuronal Vascular Biology at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, she holds Wellcome Trust Investigator Awards to investigate neurovascular interactions in brain and retina development and disease. Her research has earned her several accolades, including the Cheryll Tickle Medal from the British Society for Developmental Biology and the Judah Folkman Award from the North American Vascular Biology Organisation. Christiana also serves as an editor for academic journals such as PLoS Developmental Dynamics and the Journal of Developmental Biology.
