Christiane Andersen is a Professor Emerita at the University of Gothenburg with extensive research in German linguistics. She completed her Master’s Degree in German and English Educational Sciences at Humboldt University Berlin and pursued her doctoral studies in General Linguistics at Lomonosov University in Moscow. Her PhD thesis from 1978 focused on semantic principles and the structure of Dutch and German. From 1979 to 1987, she served as a senior research assistant at Humboldt University and later as a German lecturer at Tammerfors University. Her postdoctoral thesis (Habilitation) was published in 1985. In 1988, she joined the University of Umeå and became a professor at the University of Gothenburg in 2001. Her research interests span decades and include language typology, language contact, particularly the interactions between Siberian German and Russian. She has a keen focus on syntax, the grammar of spoken German, and the influences of isolation and contact languages. Andersen has published numerous works on neurolinguistics and cognitive grammar, especially in relation to language acquisition in learning German as a foreign language. Moreover, she has held expert assignments with The Research Council of Norway and was elected to the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg in 2004.
