Biography

Christina L. Belanger is an Associate Professor at Texas A&M University in the Department of Geosciences. Her research focuses on Marine Paleoecology, particularly the study of paleoenvironments and climate change as they relate to foraminifera and other invertebrate organisms. She investigates how ancient life has responded to environmental factors and how this understanding can help inform efforts to sustain biodiversity and economically important fisheries. Her laboratory group employs various research themes, including the reconstruction of paleoenvironments using geochemical proxies and understanding the ecological and physiological responses of marine biota to climate change. Recent projects have included studying low-oxygen events in the Gulf of Alaska over the last 60,000 years and the responses of Arctic ecosystems to Cenozoic climate changes. She has also explored the ecological changes in Matagorda Bay, Texas, over the past hundred years. Belanger has earned a PhD from the University of Chicago and a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has received several awards for her research and teaching excellence, including the College of Arts and Sciences Research Impact Award in 2023 and the Montague-Center Teaching Excellence Scholar Award for the academic year 2021-2022.
