Dr. Christina Gier

Biography

Christina Gier is an Associate Professor of Musicology at the University of Alberta, where she specializes in the intersection of gender and music. She earned her Ph.D. in Musicology from Duke University after completing her master's degree in the same field at the same institution and a bachelor's degree in Music History from the University of Idaho. Her research investigates how music reflects and shapes issues of identity and subjectivity, particularly in the context of European and American music from the early twentieth century. Gier has published a significant book titled 'Singing, Soldiering: Sheet Music from America in World War I,' exploring the cultural implications of music during wartime. Her academic articles have addressed various topics, including modernist aesthetics, the role of song leaders during World War I, and the interplay between gender and music in historical contexts. Gier's scholarship contributes to a deeper understanding of how music functions as a site of meaning in relation to gender, race, and identity within historical narratives.
