Biography

Christina Giovas is an environmental archaeologist specializing in zooarchaeology, the study of animal remains at archaeological sites. Her research focuses on ancient fisheries, non-native species introductions, human paleoecology in island coastal settings, particularly in the Caribbean and Oceania. She is especially interested in the dynamic interaction between culture and environment that has shaped biodiversity and human migration throughout history. Dr. Giovas has conducted fieldwork in regions such as the Lesser Antilles, ABC islands, Polynesia, France, the Pacific Northwest, and Ontario. Her current research program aims to document long-term social-ecological relationships and the legacy effects of human environmental impacts in the deep past. She serves as the director of the Curaçao Cultural Landscape Project (CCLP), where she collaborates with an international team to investigate the evolution of cultural landscapes in the Caribbean island of Curaçao, which has been settled for over five millennia. The field program integrates zooarchaeology, paleoecology, geoarchaeology, and geophysical surveys to document biodiversity, environmental change, and the historical relationship between human land use and conservation. In addition, she maintains ongoing research interests in the impact of analytical protocols on zooarchaeological interpretation and has co-edited a volume on this subject. Dr. Giovas is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Island Coastal Archaeology and serves on the editorial board of Archaeology in Oceania.
