Biography

Christina Halperin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Montreal, specializing in the politics of ancient Maya culture with a focus on the household as a central unit of economic politics, gender, materiality, and daily life. She has published extensively on various topics, including Maya textile production during the Classic period, ceramic figurines, chemical analysis of polychrome pottery, and landscape archaeology. Her recent book, 'Maya Figurines: Intersections State Household' (University of Texas Press, 2014), examines the relationship between households and the state through the lens of small ceramic figurines found in domestic contexts. Halperin co-edited 'Mesoamerican Figurines: Small-Scale Indices Large-Scale Social Phenomena' (2009), which was awarded the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title. Since 1997, she has conducted archaeological excavations, laboratory analyses, and museum research at various sites in Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize. Currently, she leads the Ucanal Archaeological Project in Guatemala, investigating cosmopolitan interactions on the eve of the political collapse of the Classic Maya.
