Biography

Christina Hutten is a Sessional Lecturer in Musicology and Director of Early Music Ensembles at the University of British Columbia. She is dedicated to helping students integrate academic and practical studies, and is passionate about public musicology. Hutten shares music history with diverse audiences through online courses, pre-concert chats, and program notes. Her research examines the material culture of music in the sixteenth century, focusing on the dissemination of practical musical knowledge and the process of codification that led to the development of music theory. She is currently completing a dissertation titled "How Great Name Awaits Learned Book": Orlando di Lasso’s Sacrae cantiones (1562) and the Cultivation of Musical Knowledge, which is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. As a performer, she has presented recitals across Canada, the United States, and Europe, and has collaborated with various orchestras, including the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Okanagan Symphony and Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. Hutten enthusiastically coordinates early music ensembles at UBC and has given masterclasses at several Canadian institutions.
