Christina West relocated to Victoria, BC for her new role as Associate Professor at the School of Nursing, University of Victoria. Previously, she served as an Associate Professor at the College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba and is a researcher with the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. Christina founded and leads the ‘Expressive Arts Studio: Healing Children & Families through the Arts,’ a research group guided by expressive arts, family systems, critical theory, and qualitative arts-based research methodologies. The Studio focuses on studying expressive arts-family systems interventions aimed at alleviating emotional, psychological, and spiritual suffering caused by illness and psychosocial trauma, with a particular interest in childhood cancer. The team has adapted and studied an expressive arts method known as ‘dialoguing images,’ which creates a theoretical grounding for future intervention research. Additionally, she has conducted systematic reviews on the use of digital storytelling methods in health research and mindfulness-based arts interventions in cancer care. Christina also led an innovative four-year experiential mentorship initiative for faculty and graduate students, focusing on creating community practice through qualitative inquiry.
