Biography

Christine Chaffer is an Associate Professor at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, specializing in cancer biology. She completed her PhD training at the University of Melbourne under the supervision of A/Prof Elizabeth Williams and Prof Rik Thompson. Following her PhD, she undertook post-doctoral studies at the Whitehead Institute of Biomedical Research at MIT, where she worked with Professor Robert Weinberg, a leading figure in cancer biology. Her research focuses on understanding the mechanisms that drive human cancer development, progression, and metastasis, with an emphasis on cancer cell plasticity and the interactions between different cellular states. She has published numerous high-impact papers demonstrating the role of cellular transitions in tumor progression and the development of metastatic disease. Her work also explores the effects of inflammatory responses on breast cancer and the identification of cancer stem cell-enriched populations. Christine's expertise includes mammary gland biology, breast cancer biology, and the cellular transitions associated with tumorigenicity and chemotherapy resistance.
