Biography

Musical chameleon, Christine Duncan uses her voice as an instrument across a wide range of diverse musical styles. She has been involved in everything from jazz and R&B to gospel, improvised music, sound poetry, new music, opera, and musique actuelle. Christine performs with various musical groups and projects, notably with Hugh Fraser's Vancouver Ensemble Jazz Improvisation (VEJI) since the mid-1990s, and has collaborated with Barnyard Drama drummer/electronic artist Jean Martin. Since 2007, she has created and directed the Element Choir, an improvising choir in Toronto. She has worked with Inuit throat singer and experimental vocalist Tanya Tagaq for years, performing with her voice and theremin in various settings including community engagement outreach. Christine is also an active educator, teaching in jazz programs at Humber College and the University of Toronto since 2003.
