Christine Emmett is a Teaching Fellow in World Literature at the University of Warwick, where she convenes the MA in World Literature and teaches a variety of modules mostly focused on World Literature, Postcolonial Studies, and African Literatures, with a specialization in South African literature and Critical Theory. Growing up in South Africa, she completed her Bachelor's degree in Publishing Studies at the University of Pretoria and her Master's degree in Literature and Modernity at the University of Cape Town. With the support of a Commonwealth Scholarship, she moved to the United Kingdom to complete her PhD at the University of Warwick. Her research examines discourses of legitimacy and how ideas that justify and validate the rule of particular individuals and groups become embodied in literary texts. Her doctoral work particularly focused on how these discourses affected the development of the novel in South Africa, highlighting the aesthetic strategies that South African novelists employed in response to social and economic inequalities and the legitimacy of cultural authorities. Her postdoctoral work continues this exploration within World Literature, extending the theoretical constructs of her doctoral research to representations of corruption. She has published several articles and book reviews on African literature and global modernism.
