Biography

Dr. Christine Whyte is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Glasgow, with a strong focus on Global History, particularly examining historical experiences of enslaved children. She earned a BA (Hons) in Humanities from the Open University, an MSc in History from the London School of Economics, and completed her PhD in Global History at ETH Zurich. Her research interests include Slavery Studies and Childhood Studies, specifically in the context of West Africa. Whyte founded the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at Glasgow and has actively contributed to the Centre for Gender History. She has held post-doctoral fellowships at institutions such as Bielefeld University, Bayreuth University, and Yale University, and was awarded the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship from 2015 to 2019. Her current research project, funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the British Academy, titled 'Recapturing Childhoods', seeks to interrogate the role of children in the practices of slavery and abolition. In 2020-2021, she collaborated with charities and universities to explore the history of African Mission children in Scotland. Christine has organized exhibitions and curated work focusing on the interdisciplinary connections between history, slavery, and heritage.
