Dr. Christine Williams

Biography

Christine L. Williams is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and the Center for Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986. Her research focuses on gender, race, and class in workplace contexts, exploring how these intersect to shape experiences in various sectors, including the oil and gas industry and low-wage retail work. Williams has authored and co-edited numerous influential publications, including the recent book 'Toyland: Working, Shopping, Social Inequality,' which examines the social inequalities embedded in consumer culture. In recognition of her significant contributions to sociology, she has received several awards, including the Jessie Bernard Award from the American Sociological Association and the Distinguished Feminist Lecturer Award from the Sociologists for Women in Society. Williams has served in various editorial capacities and leadership roles within the American Sociological Association, indicating her continued commitment to advancing sociological research and scholarship.
