Biography

Christof J. Schwiening is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the relationship between electrical activity in nerve cells and the resulting physiological changes. Schwiening has studied the mechanisms of calcium influx through voltage-gated calcium channels and the subsequent release and uptake of calcium from intracellular stores, which leads to pH changes within neurons. His work includes exploring pH shifts in relation to synaptic activity and the role of the plasma membrane calcium ATP-ase in counteracting these shifts. In collaboration with Peter Thorn's group, he has investigated how pH changes at the Drosophila neuromuscular junction can affect synaptic function. His recent research also examines carbon dioxide-induced anesthesia using Drosophila models to understand the mechanisms of general anesthesia. In addition to his research, Schwiening is involved in teaching various courses related to physiology.
