Biography

Christoph Emmrich (PhD University of Heidelberg, 2004) engages with diverse fields including Nepalese and Burmese Buddhism, as well as Sanskrit, Pali, Newar, Burmese, Mon, and Tamil literatures. His research focuses on the involvement of girl children and young women as ritual specialists among the Newars of the Kathmandu Valley (Nepal) and in Yangon, Mandalay, and Mawlamyine (Burma), particularly in relation to marriage, education, and monastic ordination. He addresses historical local academic exegesis, contrasting prescriptive and descriptive literary history through ritual manuals, poetry, and modern novels in Newar, Nepali, Sanskrit, and Burmese, covering the period from the early 17th century to the present, alongside personal ethnographic remembrance of singular religious events. Furthermore, Christoph works on the historiography of Tamil Digambara Jain literature, temple rituals, and education in North and South Arcot (Tamil Nadu, India). His work also explores themes of resemblance, resistance, transfer, translation, mimesis, and memory.
