Professor Christoph Gehlen conducts research in the field of construction materials, primarily focusing on the development of materials for large-format 3D printing within the construction industry. His work includes the development of methods for characterizing materials and testing a wide range of properties, including in-situ assessments. Gehlen aims to describe and predict the service life of both mineral and metallic building materials under varying exposure conditions. He studied chemistry and mineralogy at Bonn and graduated in civil engineering from RWTH Aachen University in 1995, later obtaining his doctorate from RWTH Aachen in 2000. Following this, he founded an internationally active engineering firm in Munich with partners. In 2006, he was appointed to the chair of 'Materials Civil Engineering' at the University of Stuttgart, before moving to the chair of 'Materials Science Testing' at the Technical University of Munich in 2008. Gehlen served as Dean of Studies from 2012 to 2016 and as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Bau Geo Umwelt (BGU) from 2016 to 2021, and as the founding Dean of the new TUM School of Engineering and Design (ED) starting in October 2021.
