Dr. Christoph Hess’s research focuses on the translational aspects of lymphocyte function and the metabolic basis of immune regulation. His goal is to understand the mechanisms behind disorders related to immunometabolic regulation. After completing his medical education in Zurich and Lausanne, Dr. Hess trained as an M.D. and Ph.D. at the University of Basel. He commenced his clinical training in Internal Medicine and Clinical Immunology in Basel and at Imperial College London. In 2004, he established his own research group in the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel. In 2009, he became a Professor of Medicine and Head of the Medical Outpatient Division at the Clinical Immunology Service at the University Hospital Basel. In 2019, he was appointed as a Professor of Experimental Medicine at the University of Cambridge. His research encompasses the metabolic repertoire of immune cells, including metabolic enzymes, nutrient sensors, metabolic checkpoint kinases, and the epigenetic programming of metabolic genes, which modulate specific immune functions. His aim is to delineate the molecular basis of cellular metabolism and how it regulates immune function in health and disease, defining the environmental cues that influence cellular metabolism at the immune cell level.
