Prof. Christoph von Ballmoos is the head of a research group in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Bern. His research focuses on the development of new methods for membrane protein reconstitution and the molecular interplay of respiratory enzymes, particularly cytochrome oxidase and ATP synthase. His work aims to simplify the complexity of natural membranes by reconstituting selected, purified components into lipid bilayers. This approach allows for in vitro systems to elucidate the molecular details of cellular processes involving membrane proteins. Prof. von Ballmoos received his Diploma in Biochemistry from ETH Zurich and completed his PhD on ATP synthase at the Institute of Microbiology at ETH Zurich. He has held various academic positions, including postdoctoral research at the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry at Stockholm University and has been a principal investigator funded by the Swedish Research Council. He has been a faculty member at the University of Bern since 2014, achieving the status of assistant professor on tenure track and later becoming an extraordinary professor in 2017. His contributions to the field have been documented through numerous publications, accessible in the BORIS Portal.
