Biography

Christophe Altier is a Professor at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He is a full member of The Calvin, Phoebe Joan Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases and the Chair of the Inflammation Research Network at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. His research focuses on neurobiology, particularly understanding pain mechanisms and the plasticity of specialized sensory neurons known as nociceptors in the context of chronic diseases such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer. Altier employs a range of techniques, including molecular biology, RNAscope on human sample biopsies, genetically modified mice, and behavioral analysis, to study pain signaling pathways and their role in pain resolution. His goal is to discover novel pain biomarkers and signal transducers that contribute to the chronification of pain and to develop targeted treatments. He also works with interdisciplinary approaches using germ-free gnotobiotic mouse models to investigate the influence of bacterial metabolites on pain sensitivity.
